Unique UK
Whether you
are looking for secret locations, unique events, myths and legends or just an
unusual day out, you will find the UK is a treasure trove of hidden gems just
waiting to be discovered.
Myths and Legends
Explore the
gateway to the Kingdom of Avalon. St Michael’s Tower is a grade I listed
building, sat on top of a hill formed from clay and blue lias, rising up from
the Somerset Levels, famously known as Glastonbury Tor.
Avebury is a
prehistoric site containing the largest megalithic stone circle in the world.
It actually boasts three stone circles that are of huge religious importance to
Pagans. Its original purpose is not known for sure, but it was believed to be
used for rituals and ceremonies.
Search for
fairies in Scotland. The stunning Isle of Skye is said to be inhabited by
fairies. Search for these elusive creatures in the fairy pools on the River
Brittle at the base of Black Cuillin. Remember, if you find one you must keep
it a secret!
The Armada
Tree in Larne, Northern Ireland has a fantastic story behind it. According to
local legend a sweet chestnut tree sprouted and grew from seeds in a dead
sailor’s pocket. The sailor was carrying them when his ship blew off course and
was wrecked. The sailors body was found in Ballygally in 1588 and locals buried
him in an unmarked grave in St Patricks Church of Ireland. It is not unmarked
now as a sapling sprouted and survived battering strong winds. As the sailor
came from the Spanish Armada the tree was named The Armada Tree and still
remains there today.
Unusual Events
Bog
snorkelling was started in 1976 near Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales. This unique
competition consists of competitors having to traverse a 110m water-filled
trench cut out through a peat bog. Competitors must wear flippers and a snorkel
and must rely on flipper power alone rather than conventional swimming. The
person with the fastest time is the winner. The current record holder is Neil
Rutter who completed the course in 1 minute 18.81 seconds earlier this year.
Bognor
Birdman started in 1971. It is a competition that involves human ‘birdmen’
jumping off the end of a pier and attempting to fly into the sea for prize
money. This strange event was first held in Selsey and moved to Bognor Regis in
1978. In 2008/09 the competition relocated to Worthing Pier. Both serious
aviators and inventors and even people in fancy dress take part in this
jaw-dropping, not to be missed event.
Unique Buildings
St Govan’s
Chapel is carved out of the cliffs on the Pembrokeshire coast. A hermit known
as St Govan lived here during the 6th century and legend suggests he
is still there today, buried beneath the chapels alter. This atmospheric chapel
is accessed by a descent of 52 steps from the clifftop at St Govan’s Head,
Pembrokeshire.
