Augill Castle, South Stainmore, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria

Tucked between the captivating landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, Augill Castle offers guests a rare chance to experience the magic of a genuine 19th-century castle, seamlessly blending historic grandeur with modern comforts. This family-run castle is celebrated for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and elegant yet relaxed charm.

Guests at Augill Castle can choose from a diverse range of accommodation, each thoughtfully designed to combine the historic character of the castle with contemporary comfort. From the opulent castle suites to spacious, family-friendly options, every room promises a unique and memorable stay.

The Master King Rooms offer an immersive experience in period splendour. Original features such as 18th-century oak panelling, turret wardrobes and impressive Gothic windows create an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Each room is individually styled with a selection of antique and modern four-poster beds, complemented by luxurious bathrooms and picturesque views across the castle’s gardens. While these are the oldest rooms in the castle and do not offer step-free access, cots and rollaway beds are available on request.

The Four Poster Superior Double Room combines gothic details with comfort, featuring a stunning Edwardian double four-poster bed, a decorative fireplace and a bathroom with a luxurious double-ended bath and rainfall shower.

For added versatility, the Master Super King/Twin Rooms can be arranged with either a super king bed or twin beds. Located either in the historic Orangery or within the main castle, these rooms feature beautiful Gothic windows, original fireplaces and elegant details. Some rooms offer unique features like turret wardrobes or a four-poster bath, while one room provides level, step-free access with a wet room bathroom.

The Garden Suites offer a more private and self-contained experience. The Orangery sleeps up to four and combines contemporary comfort with gothic charm, while The Gatehouse is a split-level suite perfect for two, complete with its own kitchen and patio. The Little Castle, with its turret and quirky character, offers a truly memorable stay and can accommodate up to three guests. Dogs are welcome in all three suites by prior arrangement.

Ideal for families or groups of friends, the Castle Interconnecting Suite, known as The North Wing, consists of two interconnecting rooms that share a beautifully appointed bathroom. With elegant decor and antique details, it offers a comfortable yet sophisticated retreat.

For those seeking a more independent stay, The Coach House provides self-contained accommodation for up to eight guests across four double bedrooms. Complete with a spacious family sitting room featuring a log-burning stove and baby grand piano, The Coach House combines the benefits of a private home with access to the castle’s grounds and amenities.

Dining at Augill Castle is a special experience in itself. The Music Room Restaurant, led by Head Chef Justin Woods, offers a refined yet relaxed atmosphere that celebrates the culinary heritage of northern England. With a contemporary menu rooted in local, seasonal ingredients, guests can look forward to a memorable dining experience that complements their stay.

Each accommodation choice at Augill Castle is designed to provide guests with a unique and unforgettable escape, balancing the grandeur of historic architecture with the comforts of modern living. It is a truly enchanting destination for those looking to explore the best of Yorkshire and the Lake District while staying somewhere truly extraordinary.
