Birchwood Tourist Park, Coldharbour, Wareham, Dorset

Birchwood Tourist Park is a welcoming, family-run campsite set in a particularly attractive part of Dorset, surrounded on all sides by forest. Just three miles from the town of Wareham, it offers a peaceful base where touring caravans, motorhomes, trailer-tents, roof tents and tents are all warmly received. With direct access from the park into the woodland walks of Wareham Forest, it appeals both to those who enjoy tranquil surroundings and to families looking for fresh air and space to explore.

To accommodate different types of stay, the park offers a range of pitch types. One pitch charge covers one unit and one car, with an awning or gazebo included at no extra cost where applicable. Guests can choose from four main pitch categories: A, B, C and D, and then add any relevant extras according to season and party size. Additional charges may apply for adults aged 18 and over, children aged three to seventeen, dogs, and extra or visitor cars, though children under three stay free. All pets are expected to be well behaved and kept on a short lead, helping to maintain a relaxed and friendly atmosphere across the site.

Type A pitches are fully serviced and open all year round. These pitches are on block paved hard standing with either a gravel area for an awning or full gravel, and include a water connection point, TV connection socket for Freeview channels, a 15/16 amp electric hook-up and a waste drain outlet. Type B pitches, also available all year, are semi-serviced and provide a water connection, TV connection socket and 15/16 amp electric hook-up. Here, guests can choose between grass and paved hard standing, with the grass pitches open from 1 March to 31 October and the hard standing available throughout the year.

Type C pitches offer grass or gravel with a 10 amp electric hook-up and are suitable for caravans, motorcaravans, trailer tents and tents. They are generally sized at five metres wide by eight metres long, with the option to contact the park in advance if a larger unit needs to be accommodated. Type D pitches are non-electric grass pitches, with the same general dimensions and suitability for a wide range of camping units. In all cases, pitch fees run from 12.30 pm on the day of arrival until 11.00 am on the day of departure, giving guests a clear and convenient window for their stay.

The facilities on-site are designed to make life as easy and enjoyable as possible. A well-stocked shop provides general groceries, sweets, ice cream, soft drinks, toys, camping and caravanning supplies, an off licence and Calor gas exchange, meaning many essentials can be picked up without leaving the park. The toilet and shower blocks, which are heated in winter, offer free hot showers, while both indoor and outdoor wash-up sinks are available for dishes and general use. Practical needs are further supported by a motorhome drive-through waste water point, chemical toilet disposal points, a dog wash, an access security barrier and electric car charging points.

For those looking for information or inspiration, the park also provides leaflets and details about the local area, helping guests to plan days out or discover new places nearby. Families are particularly well catered for, with a children’s play area and sandpit providing space for younger guests to let off steam. In the warmer months, from the end of May to the end of August, an unheated and unsupervised paddling pool offers simple splash-about fun. For older children and adults, there is a pool table and table tennis, as well as a games field suitable for ball games and kite flying. Pitch-and-putt equipment is available for hire, adding another option for relaxed on-site activity.

Alongside its pitches and facilities, Birchwood Tourist Park can also help with enquiries about rallies, caravan storage and seasonal pitches, making it a flexible choice for both short breaks and longer-term arrangements. With its combination of forest surroundings, well-thought-out amenities and friendly, family-focused approach, it offers a comfortable and convenient base for enjoying Dorset’s countryside and coast.
