The George Inn, Croscombe, Wells, Somerset

The George Inn is a characterful 17th-century inn in the picturesque Somerset village of Croscombe, close to Wells and the beautiful Mendip Hills. Family owned and independently run, this traditional free house combines comfortable accommodation, freshly prepared food and a welcoming village pub atmosphere.

Food is an important part of a stay at The George Inn. The menu brings together traditional pub favourites and contemporary British dishes, complemented by regularly changing specials. Food is prepared from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients used whenever possible. Guests can dine in several characterful areas throughout the inn, from the intimate snug and old tack room to the restaurant and main bar. During the colder months, an open fire and wood-burning stove add to the cosy surroundings.

Four individually styled guest rooms provide a comfortable place to stay while exploring Somerset. Each has en-suite facilities, free Wi-Fi, a television and tea-making facilities. The Loft can be arranged as a double or twin, while the Canada room offers a spacious double with the added luxury of a bath. The Poppy is a cosy double and the Woods provides comfortable accommodation for solo travellers.

Mornings can begin with anything from a convenient takeaway breakfast sandwich to a traditional full English breakfast. Vegetarian choices and special dietary requirements can also be catered for. On warmer days, guests can enjoy a morning tea or coffee in the private garden before heading out to explore.

As a traditional free house, The George Inn also takes pride in its selection of drinks. Its exclusive real ales, King George The Thirst and George and the Dragon, are brewed by Blindman’s Brewery using Mendip spring water. A changing choice of guest ales from local and national breweries is also available, together with several local ciders and a wide range of other drinks.

Its location makes The George Inn an excellent base for discovering this part of Somerset. Set at the foot of the Mendip Hills and within easy reach of both Wells and Shepton Mallet, guests can spend their days exploring historic towns, rolling countryside and some of the county’s best-known attractions before returning for good food, a local ale and a comfortable night’s rest.
