The
Open Golf Championship 2013
The Open Championship was first played in 1860 at
Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.
It was restricted to professionals and attracted a field
of eight Scottish golfers, who played three rounds of Prestwick's twelve-hole
course in a single day. Willie Park
Senior won with a score of 174, beating the favourite, Old Tom Morris, by two
strokes. The following year the tournament was opened to amateurs; eight of
them joined ten professionals in the field.
Since then The Open Championship has grown to become one
of the biggest golfing championships in the world and in 2013 it returns to
Scotland where it will be held at Muirfield.
This will be the 16th time Muirfield has hosted the
tournament and the first since 2002. In its 142nd year The Open is the oldest
of the four Major Championships in professional golf.
Date: 18th – 21st July 2013.
