Tiverton is a market town with a Charter dating from 1258. It stands above its two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman. It was originally known as Twyfordton, a two ford town. In the middle ages it was an important market place and became a centre for the woollen industry, with many wealthy merchants endowing it. It has very interesting architecture.
There are three medieval alms houses. St. Peter`s Church next to the Castle is wonderful and well worth a visit, and so is St. George's Church, the finest Georgian church in Devon. Knightshayes Court is a couple of miles away - wonderful garden.
