Ingram House, Ingram, Alnwick, Northumberland
The house itself, originally a traditional two-up, two-down farmhouse built in the 18th century, has been thoughtfully expanded over the years. The latest renovations include the conversion of some outbuildings into a granny annex when the Levien family moved in. The surrounding garden, once overgrown and wild, has been lovingly cultivated into a more structured yet still blossoming space, reflecting years of dedication with an ongoing ten-year plan.
Ingram House's location is ideal for exploring the rich landscape and history of Northumberland. Situated on the Sandstone Way cycle route from Berwick upon Tweed to Hexham, it serves as a prime stop for walkers traveling from Wooler to Alwinton, offering numerous scenic walks through the hills and along the coast. The Breamish Valley around the property is steeped in history, with signs of Iron Age and Stone Age settlements dotting the landscape.
The accommodations at Ingram House are comfortably traditional, featuring a double and a twin room upstairs, both with ensuite baths, and a garden room on the ground floor that can be arranged as a twin or king-size double. This room is particularly airy and light, offering direct access to a gravelled courtyard, and like all rooms, comes equipped with a television and hospitality tray. Meals, particularly breakfast, are served in the family dining room, part of a spacious kitchen where local produce is a staple.
For guests interested in local culture and history, the adjacent St Michael and All Angels Church is a must-visit, with services held throughout the year and visitors always welcomed. Attractions within a short drive include the innovative Alnwick Gardens, created by the Duchess of Northumberland, and the majestic Bamburgh Castle, perched on a granite outcrop along the coast. Holy Island (Lindisfarne), significant as the cradle of Christianity in Britain, and the Farne Islands, home to puffins and seals, are also accessible for those willing to travel a bit further.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Ros Castle offers a gentle hill climb with rewarding views of up to seven local castles on a clear day. The area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and Ingram House caters to these activities with facilities including bike storage and drying rooms.
Although Ingram House is a pet-friendly environment, hosting several cats and dogs, guest pets are limited to one well-behaved dog that can stay in the guest's car; discussions about this arrangement are welcome upon booking.
