Plas Y Bwlch Farm Bed & Breakfast, Llangurig, Llanidloes, Powys

Plas Y Bwlch Farm Bed & Breakfast, situated in Llangurig near Llanidloes in Powys, is a hidden gem in the heart of the Upper Wye Valley. This charming farmhouse bed and breakfast, set on 15 acres of working farmland, is the perfect spot for guests seeking peace and a connection to the natural beauty of Mid Wales.

The accommodation at Plas Y Bwlch has been awarded a 4-star rating by the Welsh Tourist Board. It features two guest bedrooms – a double and a twin – both with en-suite bathrooms and located on the lower ground floor, ensuring a quiet and restful stay. Each room is equipped with those essential home comforts: beverage-making facilities, colour television with remote, hairdryer, and an alarm clock radio. The rooms are bright, comfortable and warm, thanks to central heating with thermostatic radiator valves in each space.

The lower ground floor also houses a welcoming lounge and dining room for guests to relax in, featuring an original bread oven that adds a charming historic touch. Here, guests will find another television and a collection of literature and maps about the surrounding area, making it easy to plan a day’s adventure.

For visitors arriving by car, there is plenty of off-road parking on the large swept drive. For those with a passion for the outdoors – cyclists, rally drivers or motorcyclists – secure and locked parking is also available, giving peace of mind during your stay.

Life on the farm adds an extra layer of authenticity to the stay. Plas Y Bwlch is home to a small flock of rare Pedigree Dutch Zwartbles sheep, alongside Beulah Speckled and Devils Bridge Speckled sheep. Guests are invited to visit the farm during lambing season in March and April to see the baby lambs, particularly the striking Zwartbles lambs, who, with their size and striking looks, are often compared to small calves. Fresh farm eggs from the resident chickens make for a delicious start to each morning.

For nature lovers and bird watchers, Plas Y Bwlch offers views of the beautiful Red Kite – a species once nearly extinct in the UK but now thriving again in Mid Wales. Guests can watch these magnificent birds soaring effortlessly on the thermals above the valley or visit the nearby feeding stations for an even closer look. Other regular visitors to the skies and hedgerows around the farm include sparrowhawks, woodpeckers, nuthatches, siskins, and even, recently, a pair of Osprey following the River Wye.

The surrounding area is a paradise for walkers and cyclists. With maps and guidebooks available, guests can set out to explore the stunning landscape at their own pace. The Lon Las Cymru (Welsh National Cycle Route) passes through Llangurig on its way to Rhayader, while the Severn Way – Britain’s longest riverside walk – meanders through the valley, offering ever-changing scenery and quiet paths. Packed lunches can be provided on request, making it easy to make the most of every adventure.

The Upper Wye Valley is a place of natural beauty and rich history. Llangurig itself, the first village on the River Wye, boasts the ancient Parish Church of St Curig, which dates back to before 550AD. The church is noted for its fine woodwork and stained glass windows, a quiet testament to the area’s deep roots.
