South Town Farm, Loxhore, Barnstaple, Devon

South Town Farm is a peaceful getaway set in the quiet village of Loxhore, deep within the unspoilt countryside of North Devon. With an eco campsite and a cosy Shepherd’s Hut to choose from, guests are invited to immerse themselves in a landscape of acidic grasslands, woodlands and wood pasture. The farm plays an important role in a conservation grazing project, using native breed cattle to manage and enhance wildlife habitats. A stay here is therefore as much about connecting with nature as it is about relaxation.

The eco campsite is small and intimate, with only ten grass pitches spread across two fields. This deliberate choice ensures plenty of space and a true sense of peace. The site is car-free and off-grid, with eco toilets, a gas-powered shower and a covered washing-up area. Paths are mown to provide access to level pitches, while central meadows are left to grow into hayfields before being cut at the end of summer, supporting a rich diversity of wildflowers and grasses. Families are well catered for, with children able to enjoy the safety of car-free fields and small tents easily accommodated.

Facilities are simple but thoughtful. A wooden ablutions block provides eco toilets and a warm shower, and an information point offers guidance for exploring the area. Cars are parked at the edge of the site, with large wheelbarrows available to transport belongings. With lambs and ewes often grazing nearby, the atmosphere is very much that of a working farm, though for this reason dogs are not permitted. Evenings can be spent around fire pits, available for hire along with logs, or guests can bring their own raised fire pits and barbecues. The site’s location away from artificial light makes it an excellent spot for stargazing, with the night sky revealing itself in brilliant detail.

For those looking for extra comfort, the Shepherd’s Hut provides a charming and private alternative. Positioned in a quiet corner of one of the fields, it offers uninterrupted views across the countryside. Inside, a double bed with a natural fibre mattress, wool duvet and recycled wool blankets provides a warm and cosy retreat. A woodburner ensures comfort on cooler evenings, while a table, chairs and armchair add space to relax. Cooking facilities include a two-hob camping stove and cold box outside, leaving the interior free for rest. Outdoors, there is seating, a small barbecue and a fire pit, perfect for enjoying the sunsets and evenings under the stars. With a minimum two-night stay, it is an ideal place to slow down and escape everyday life.

South Town Farm is also perfectly positioned for exploring. Guests can wander the farm walk, follow footpaths and bridleways across the neighbouring Arlington Estate, or venture into Exmoor National Park which lies close by. For those wishing to spend time at the coast, the beaches of North Devon are less than half an hour away. Local attractions include the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon, Exmoor Zoo, Watermouth Castle, The BIG Sheep and the National Trust’s Arlington Court and Carriage Museum.
