Low Steads Holiday Cottages, Longhoughton, Alnwick, Northumberland

Low Steads Holiday Cottages are set along the Northumberland coast within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making them the perfect setting for a coastal getaway. Located on a traditional working family farm, the cottages are just a short stroll from two beautiful beaches, Howdiemont Bay and Sugar Sands, offering guests the chance to enjoy both tranquillity and stunning scenery.

Curlew Cottage, sleeping four, is a detached property specifically designed for easy wheelchair access. The open-plan lounge with a log-burning stove flows into a fully equipped kitchen that opens onto a natural stone patio. The cottage has two bedrooms, one with twin beds and the other with a king-sized bed, along with a spacious wet room with underfloor heating, grab rails and an optional shower chair. Outside, a tarmac drive and flagstone ramp provide smooth access, while a path around the cottage and a lawn area enhance its practicality and charm.

Whinney Cottage, also sleeping four, is equally well designed for accessibility. It offers a welcoming open-plan lounge with log-burning stove, reclining chair and patio doors leading outside. The kitchen is thoughtfully equipped with a side-opening oven, and the bedrooms include a twin room and an accessible king-sized room. The tiled wet room, with underfloor heating and grab rails, ensures maximum comfort and ease of use.

Howdiemont Cottage, one of the most popular, is a bright and spacious property for four guests. It has a south-facing lounge with original fireplace, log-burning stove, dining area and direct access to the garden. A fully fitted kitchen complements the two large bedrooms – one king-size and one twin – and the family bathroom provides both a shower and a bath.

Croft Cottage sleeps up to six and is filled with natural light, with all bedrooms and the lounge facing south. The lounge features an inglenook fireplace with log-burning stove, a sofa, chairs and oak dining table. The galley kitchen is fully equipped, and the cottage has three bedrooms: a king-size, a twin and a double. A private enclosed garden with seating makes this cottage especially appealing for families.

Rose Cottage, also sleeping six, has a more traditional farm layout. The good-sized lounge includes an inglenook fireplace, two sofas and an extending oak dining table, while the kitchen and pantry provide ample space for self-catering. The three bedrooms include a king-size, a twin and a double, with a bathroom offering a walk-in shower and heated towel rail.

The surrounding area is as appealing as the cottages themselves. Guests can walk 10–15 minutes down a picturesque lane, passing farm buildings, hedgerows and fields of crops and livestock, to reach Howdiemont Bay and Sugar Sands. From the coast, the scenic path leads north to Howick, Craster and Embleton, or south to Boulmer, Alnmouth and Warkworth. Historic castles, coastal villages and market towns are all within easy reach, making Low Steads Holiday Cottages a perfect base for exploring Northumberland’s diverse landscapes and attractions.
