Dairy Cottage, Ropley, Alresford, Hampshire
The cottage, which sleeps up to five guests, is part of a small working farm situated in a rural conservation area. Once a dairy farm, it was converted into a holiday cottage in 1982 when milking ceased, but the farm continues to operate as a smallholding, producing hay and silage to feed the cattle during the winter months.
Inside, Dairy Cottage combines comfort and practicality, creating a welcoming home-from-home atmosphere. The ground floor is centrally heated, while the first floor features convection heaters. Guests will find all fuel, power, bed linen, and towels included in the price. Facilities include a cot, highchair, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, electric oven and stove, combi microwave oven, TV, DVD player, and radio/CD player. The spacious lounge and dining area offer plenty of room to relax, and the well-equipped kitchen provides everything needed for self-catering. There is also a ground-floor shower room and toilet for convenience.
Upstairs, the main bedroom includes a double and single bed with an en suite bathroom. Two additional single bedrooms complete the sleeping arrangements, one of which is a smaller, cosy room ideal for a child. Outside, guests can make use of the large courtyard and patio area with garden furniture, perfect for enjoying a quiet morning coffee or an evening drink. One well-behaved pet is welcome for a small charge, and there is ample car parking available on-site.
Dairy Cottage is ideally located between the historic cathedral city of Winchester and the market towns of Alton and Petersfield. The nearby town of Alresford is particularly picturesque, with the River Arle flowing into a lake that feeds the River Itchen navigation. Visitors can take a leisurely walk along the river, passing the old Fulling Mill and enjoying views of trout gliding through the water alongside ducks and moorhens.
The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for exploration. Winchester, with its stunning cathedral and medieval streets, is just a twenty-minute drive away, while the New Forest and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard can be reached in around forty minutes. Portsmouth’s attractions include the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, and HMS Warrior, providing fascinating insights into Britain’s naval history. Closer to Ropley, visitors can discover Jane Austen’s house in Chawton or take a nostalgic journey on the Watercress Line steam railway, which runs between Alton and Alresford and stops at Ropley on its route through the countryside.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Lasham airfield lies to the north of Ropley, where gliders can often be seen soaring peacefully above the landscape. Gliding courses and trial flights are available for those wishing to try something new. Numerous footpaths and bridleways can be accessed directly from the farm gate, making it an ideal location for walkers and riders alike. Nearby stables offer riding lessons for all ages and abilities, while a book of local walks and a collection of books and puzzles are provided in the cottage for guests to enjoy during their stay.
