Off The Rails, Station Road, Plockton, Ross-Shire

Off The Rails offers a remarkable self-catering escape in Plockton, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Cuillin mountains of Skye. This unique property, converted with thoughtful attention to detail, provides an ideal base for exploring Ross-Shire’s coastal paths, wildlife, scenery and nearby attractions. Whether guests seek tranquillity or adventure, Off The Rails presents a memorable and characterful Highlands experience.

The former railway station has been carefully transformed to ensure comfort and enjoyment throughout. High-quality furnishings, considered lighting and heating, smart televisions, music systems, DVD players and an open fire in the lounge all contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. Accommodating up to six people and positioned just minutes from the village centre, the property also offers parking directly outside and is fully accessible at ground-floor level, making it suitable for guests with additional needs.

Each of the original station rooms has been repurposed with charm and respect for the building’s history. The Old Ticket Office now serves as the lounge, retaining pitch pine cladding, wooden flooring and the original Victorian fireplace. The preserved ticket hatch adds further character. This calming space includes a smart television, DVD player, comfortable seating and a sofa bed, with furnishings adjusted seasonally to create either a cosy or airy feel.

The Ladies Waiting Room has been beautifully converted into a bedroom featuring a king-size bed, smart television, DVD player, comfortable chairs and fitted carpet. Its former neighbouring room, the Gentlemen’s Toilet, is now an impressive en-suite wet room complete with sauna, cold drench shower, thermostatically controlled hot shower and underfloor heating.

Practical touches continue with the former Ladies Toilet, now a utility room equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer, pulley drying system and freezer. With its tiled floor, this room also accommodates bicycles, boots and outdoor equipment.

The Gentlemen’s Waiting Room is now an inviting open-plan kitchen and dining area. Retaining its pitch pine cladding and original flooring, the space offers an atmosphere reminiscent of the station’s operational days. Modern facilities include an island unit with breakfast bar, induction hob, oven, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The Victorian open-hearth fire provides warmth and character, while the dining space is complemented by an alcove lined with books, magazines, a radio, CD player and an iPod docking station.

The Station Master’s Office has become a second bedroom, retaining its pine cladding and historical charm. Guests can choose either a king-size or twin beds thanks to a zip-and-link arrangement, with a mattress topper provided for added comfort. A smart television, DVD player and hairdryer are also included, and the original fireplace remains in place as a nod to the building’s past.

Blending heritage with modern comfort, Off The Rails offers an outstanding Highland retreat that honours its history while delivering everything guests need for an enjoyable and relaxing stay in Plockton.
