Porth Tocyn Hotel, Bwlchtocyn, Abersoch, Gwynedd

Set on a headland beyond the sailing village of Abersoch, Porth Tocyn Hotel enjoys breathtaking views across Cardigan Bay towards the mountains of Snowdonia. Furnished with country antiques, watercolours, prints and shelves of books, the hotel offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to return time and again.

Each bedroom is individually styled, combining antique furnishings and artwork with modern comforts to ensure a relaxing stay. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen televisions and beds dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets with quality blankets or duvets. Bathrooms are fresh and contemporary, finished with modern tiling, thick Egyptian cotton towels and powerful showers, most over baths, with a small number of walk-in showers also available. Sea-view and country-view rooms feature high-quality zip-and-link beds that can be arranged as twins or a super king, while even the snug double rooms offer generous king-size beds.

Due to the character and history of the building, room layouts vary, allowing sleeping arrangements to suit a wide range of needs, from families to guests with accessibility considerations. One sea-view double room includes a children’s anteroom with a full-size single day bed and an additional pull-out bed. Several country-view king rooms can be interconnected with single, twin or bunk-bedded rooms, making them ideal for families of four. A limited number of cots are available, although guests are encouraged to bring familiar bedding for babies and toddlers.

Dining plays a central role in the Porth Tocyn experience, with memorable meals served in the award-winning restaurant and relaxed summer lunches enjoyed on the terrace. Food has long been at the heart of the hotel’s reputation, with continuous recognition in the Good Food Guide since 1957, the longest running entry outside of London, along with two AA rosettes. Seasonal à la carte lunches are served from Monday to Saturday, offering a varied menu that includes fresh, light dishes, locally sourced fish, fillet steaks and indulgent desserts, enjoyed indoors, in the gardens or al fresco on the terrace. Sundays typically feature a set lunch menu. In the evenings, a seasonally changing à la carte menu with daily specials is served from 7pm, with a choice of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes created using the finest available ingredients.

Guests can relax in a collection of cosy sitting rooms filled with antiques, fresh flowers, books and magazines, or enjoy the intimate bar area. Younger guests are well catered for with a dedicated children’s snug and an adjoining table tennis room. Outside, beautifully maintained interlinking gardens surround a secluded heated outdoor swimming pool, open from mid-May until early September. The sea-facing terrace offers an excellent setting for lunch or afternoon tea and provides direct access to the Wales Coast Path.

The Llŷn Peninsula, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is renowned for its dramatic coastline of sweeping bays, hidden coves, sandy beaches and rugged headlands, all linked by the Wales Coast Path. It is a wonderful destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for golf, sailing and a wide range of watersports, while the mountains and scenery of Snowdonia are within easy reach. Abersoch is an ideal base for exploring the area, offering a lively harbour, golden beaches perfect for swimming and surfing, and scenic coastal walks with views across Cardigan Bay. Nearby Aberdaron, located at the tip of the peninsula, appeals with its historic church and National Trust beach, while boat trips to Bardsey Island offer memorable wildlife and birdwatching experiences. Inland, attractive market towns and further countryside adventures add to the appeal of this diverse and beautiful part of North Wales.
