White Heron Properties, Lyonshall, Herefordshire

White Heron Estate offers a collection of six distinctive self-catering properties set within the beautiful 700-acre Whittern Estate on the Herefordshire and Welsh borders. Surrounded by rolling countryside, orchards and vineyards, these thoughtfully restored homes provide a peaceful rural escape while maintaining high standards of comfort and style. With options ranging from large celebration houses to cosy cottages, the estate is well suited to family holidays, group gatherings and relaxed country breaks.

Among the standout properties is The Colloquy, a spacious luxury retreat created from former Victorian stable buildings. Designed for large groups and special occasions, it sleeps 16 guests as standard, with the flexibility to accommodate up to 23. Inside, guests can enjoy generous living spaces including stylish reception rooms, well-equipped kitchens and a dedicated cinema room. Outdoors, extensive walled gardens create a private setting for relaxing and entertaining, with an outdoor heated swimming pool available in summer, alongside a private hot tub and sauna.

The Sherriffs is a grand Grade II-listed Queen Anne country house set in a secluded spot on the estate. Sleeping up to 18 guests across eight spacious bedrooms, it includes six bathrooms, four of which are en-suite. The house retains many original historic features, while being sympathetically updated for modern comfort. Guests have plenty of room to spread out with three large reception rooms, including a classic drawing room and a cosy sitting room with an open fire. A large farmhouse-style kitchen and a dining room provide a welcoming space for shared meals, while mature gardens and lawns offer space for outdoor dining, games and countryside relaxation. Well-behaved pets are also welcome.

For a more intimate countryside stay, Field Cottage is a charming, dog-friendly retreat set in a peaceful orchard and vineyard setting. It enjoys panoramic views stretching from the Welsh Black Mountains to the South Shropshire Hills. Inside, the cottage has a warm, rustic character with antique furnishings and home comforts throughout. Downstairs includes a hall, cloakroom, well-equipped kitchen and a large open-plan sitting and dining room opening onto a south-facing terrace, ideal for family barbecues or quiet evenings enjoying the scenery. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one double and one twin, along with a shared bathroom, with space for an additional z-bed if needed. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary hamper of local goodies, and amenities include central heating, Wi-Fi, an open fire, washer/dryer, TV, games and outdoor furniture. A hot tub is also available at an additional charge.

The Lodge offers a uniquely characterful hideaway blending historic charm with contemporary comfort. This quirky country property features a mix of cosy and spacious living areas, including a welcoming sitting room with a wood burner and an open-plan dining kitchen perfect for relaxed meals. Upstairs, the bedrooms are individually styled and light-filled. One of The Lodge’s most distinctive features is its private cinema room, providing a fun space to unwind after a day exploring the estate’s orchards, farmland and walking trails. Outside, peaceful garden areas and the wider rural landscape complete the sense of escape.

The Forge is a peaceful, character-filled cottage ideal for a romantic getaway or a quiet break in the countryside. Once part of the estate’s historic buildings, it has been thoughtfully transformed into cosy self-catering accommodation with rustic charm and modern essentials. The interior feels warm and inviting, with a wood burner and carefully chosen furnishings, while the well-equipped kitchen makes it easy to enjoy relaxed meals at home. Outside, guests can sit and take in views across the surrounding fields and farmland, enjoying the calm pace of rural life.

Gardener’s Cottage is a welcoming self-catering retreat set within the estate’s gardens, offering a peaceful base for couples, families or small groups. Tastefully furnished with a blend of classic and contemporary touches, it includes a well-equipped kitchen, cosy living spaces and two comfortable bedrooms served by a modern bathroom. Large windows and easy access to outdoor areas allow guests to enjoy views over the garden and countryside beyond, while the estate’s orchards, vineyards and walking trails are right on the doorstep.

Across all six properties, guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the estate grounds, access to local produce and the chance to explore Herefordshire’s countryside, with walking routes and market towns nearby. The Forge, The Lodge and Gardener’s Cottage guests have use of the pool until midday, while The Colloquy has access to the pool all day. Gardener’s Cottage, Field Cottage and The Sherriffs are dog friendly, and EV charging is available for guests at all properties.

For a memorable experience during a stay, the White Heron Estate e-Bike Vineyard Tours offer a unique way to explore the surrounding landscape. Led by a knowledgeable guide, guests cycle through vineyards, apple orchards and blackcurrant fields while learning about the farm’s history, heritage, crops, biodiversity and environmental initiatives. The tour concludes with a tasting of the estate’s award-winning British Cassis liqueur, White Heron Estate sparkling wine, apple juice and cider. Guests can also choose to add an off-grid salad and charcuterie platter or a full fire-pit barbecue chef experience at an additional cost, enjoyed at a rustic oak table with beautiful views. There is also the opportunity to purchase favourite estate products before heading home.

The estate’s location near Lyonshall makes it an excellent base for exploring the Welsh borders. The surrounding area offers rolling countryside, historic landmarks and charming market towns. Nearby Kington, set beneath Hergest Ridge, provides independent shops and access to walking routes along Offa’s Dyke Path. The literary town of Hay-on-Wye is also within reach and is famous for its bookshops and annual festival. The black and white village trail showcases traditional timber-framed houses, while the cathedral city of Hereford is home to Hereford Cathedral and the historic Mappa Mundi. With scenic drives, local cider producers and peaceful river valleys close by, Lyonshall is a rewarding base for discovering this unspoilt corner of the Herefordshire and Welsh borders.
